Bertrand Du Guesclin (1320-1380), who is portrayed by this piece, was a national French hero nicknamed “The Black Dog of Brittany” for his bravery in the Hundred Years War, among other battles. He was the son of Robert Du Guesclin, Lord of La Motte-Broons and first took arms by the side of Charles de Blois in the War of Succession in Brittany in 1342. He was an outstanding military leader who attained the highest ranking as Constable of France in 1370. Upon his death, he was buried in the Royal necropolis of Saint-Denis, next to Charles V, whom he served bravely for many years.
