About Biedermeier

Biedermeier furniture is a fascinating period in furniture history. The Biedermeier period refers to an era in Central Europe between 1815 and 1848. Biedermeier furniture was the first style to emerge from the growing middle class.

Biedermeier furniture was done in light native woods and avoided the use of metal ornamentation. Surfaces showcased natural grains and knotholes or ebonized accents for contrast, with modest inlay occasionally used. Clean lines coupled with minimal ornamentation were emphasized. As the period progressed, however, the style moved to increasingly ornate commissions by a rising middle class, eager to show their newfound wealth. The political unrests of 1845–1848 ended the era, moving on to Wilhelminian or Victorian styles.
