About Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton (1821-1892) was a fashion designer and businessman who founded the Louis Vuitton brand of leather goods. Born in Anchay in Eastern France, Vuitton lost his mother at the age of 10 and his father soon after. He left for Paris at the age of 13 and traveled for more than two years until he arrived at the age of 16. He became an apprentice for Monsieur Marechal, a successful box maker.
Vuitton found his place as a trunk maker, most notably for Eugenie de Montijo, the wife of Napoleon III. He was the first to create stackable waterproof trunks, revolutionizing an industry that until then only had created rounded top trunks. Louis’ design of shellac embedded canvas was named Damier. He soon added the current monogram pattern, since it was illegal to copy monograms.
Vuitton and his son, Georges, also designed the first pick-proof lock. Vuitton customized the locks and kept the pattern of the lock in his workshop registered to the owner in case a copy of the key was ever needed. The lock was so effective that Georges challenged Harry Houdini, the great American escape artist, in a public newspaper, to escape from a Vuitton box and lock. Houdini never arose to the challenge.
The legendary LV pattern lives on today and is shown proudly by consumers worldwide. Louis Vuitton brings revolutionary design and remarkable craftsmanship to every item they craft.
