Heather chose this beautiful chatelaine for the April 2019 Edition of Staff Picks. “This chatelaine is a wonderful piece of history. Chatelaine’s are a series of chains suspended from a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist. In the 19th century they were used as a woman’s key chain and showed the status of the woman depending on the items it contained. Younger women and daughters often wanted the appearance of responsibility, and would wear decorative chatelaines with a variety of small objects in the place of keys. This particular piece has a beautiful repousse silver metal open work wire design and hanging from various chains are a pencil, a tablet, a scent bottle, a pin cushion and a button hook.”
