Staff Pick
Michael chose this piece for the June 2019 edition of Staff Picks. “Living here in wine country (and loving wine), I really identify with this painting. My first impression is how similar it is to the agricultural artwork that was used as labels for crates identifying various company’s fruit & vegetable products in the early 20th century. This is when Southern California was much more heavily agrarian. The painting itself features hardworking field hands harvesting the grape crop with the golden hues of the setting sun in the background casting a glow on the verdant vineyards. At first glance in seems quite peaceful & pastoral but is underscored by the toiling workers whose efforts will ultimately become that next great bottle of cabernet savignon.”
