Solvang, California, February 8, 2017 — A continuing tradition of excellence is the theme for Solvang Antiques, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Established in 1977, it is a fixture in Solvang, committed to a legacy of quality and innovation.

Seven years ago, in February 2010, Dwight and Arlene Steffensen acquired the Solvang Antique Center from Ron and Julie Palladino. Now called Solvang Antiques, it is located on Copenhagen Drive around the corner from the original location. The Steffensens are committed to continuing the tradition of quality and exceptional customer service.

“We have always loved antiques and fine art,” says Dwight. “We had just returned from shopping for period lighting at the Solvang Antique Center,” added Arlene, when they found a postcard announcing the retirement of Ron and Julie Palladino. “Dwight walked into the house holding the postcard and asked if I wanted to own an antique store. I didn’t even hesitate,” she laughs, “I said sure.”

Recently celebrating their 51st wedding anniversary, Dwight and Arlene have been childhood sweethearts since they were sixteen. Dwight spent his professional career rising to the top of three highly successful distribution companies. After his retirement in 2000, they traveled and spent time with their two children and four grandchildren.

They inherited a massive inventory when they purchased the store. They set out to enhance the business while preserving its integral character. Clocks and music boxes were a distinct feature of the original store. They are still a major part of the business, which now has a renewed focus on antique and estate jewelry, furniture and fine art.

“The other big change that we made,” says Dwight, “is that Judith Hale came to work with us right after we bought the business.” The longtime Los Olivos gallery owner he says, “started adding her art into the store and it’s now a big part of what we do.” Several times a year Solvang Antiques hosts art shows and exhibits which usually include featured artists displaying their talents as “artists in residence.”

The Steffensens kept most of the same dealers and consigners according to Dwight, who adds, “from a continuity standpoint, we are still that store. It also shows that we didn’t just come last week. We have been here for a while, and we have a reputation to uphold.”

“Our customers are our first priority,” says Arlene. “Many have been buying from the store for decades. We wanted to make sure to keep that loyalty.”

After 40 years, Solvang Antiques is more vibrant than ever. World-class service and quality merchandise is the foundation on which a fresh approach is built.
