French
Perpetual Calendar Clock, c. 1875 |
This
stunning example of 19th century French Perpetual Calendar clocks
is a wonderful marriage of complicated and beautifully finished
movements with aesthetically exciting casework.
The eight day, two train upper movement strikes the hours and half
hours on a bell, and features a skeletonized Brocot escapement with
ruby pallets against a white porcelain dial. A high degree of accuracy
is assured by an Ellicott style temperature-compensating pendulum.
The lower movement incorporates a perpetual calendar with day, date,
month, leap year and phases of the moon.
The case is a sculptural masterpiece in gilt brass, white marble
and beveled glass.
Perpetual calendar mantel regulators were made in many forms from
black Belgian marble cases to simple brass four glass cases. This
art form case is among the scarcer and most attractive examples
of the genre and promises to be a sound investment for its next
owner.
