Windmill Clock with Barometer and Thermometers, c. 1875 |
Featured
this month is a French gilt and patinated bronze windmill clock
with clock barometer and two thermometers. This is a high quality
rendition of a French fantasy clock, lovingly restored to as new
condition with a one-year warranty. Dimensions: 18”H x 7”Dia,
c. 1875.
Animated French clocks became popular during the Industrial Revolution.
Many of them depicted steam engines, trains, ships or factory production
machinery to celebrate the excitement of the new age of manufacturing.
The windmill clock is a pleasant country theme celebrating an earlier
agrarian way of life outside the busting city.
This is quite a rare model and among the highest quality examples
of the genre. The tower is heavy bronze with fine casting detail,
the roof is copper and the disks, blades and bezels are brass. All
the various metals have been carefully refinished to their original
colors. The clock movement is a high quality eight day balance wheel,
there is an aneroid barometer above and two thermometers on either
side of the tower. An independent clock motor in the base drives
the blades of the windmill. Offered at $11,500.
