Month Running Tall Case Clock by Simon De Charmes |
This
is an exceptional clock with an unusual combination of attractive
features reflecting the experience and design talents of an important
early 18th century London maker.
Simon De Charmes was a French Huguenot working in London from 1691
to 1730. This clock is done in the classic London style of 1720.
Talll elegant proportions in rare burl walnut with delicate and
complex pierced blind fretwork in the hood arches and side panels.
What distinguishes it from other London clocks is the addition of
Dutch style bird and floral marquetry and tastefully understated
gold trim moldings in the French manner. The marriage of these design
elements from the 3 most important clock making countries of the
era, make this a distinctive, beautiful and historically significant
horological treasure. De Charmes fitted this case with a two bell
Dutch striking movement running 30 days on a winding.
